Phones, Movies, Games and Clothes #SimpleLittleSunday

It’s my favorite day of the week! We had quite the crew today, check us out!Photo on 7-27-14 at 12.14 PM

Ok, here we go!

  • Max got 4 new video games
  • Julia went camping and got to go fishing. She saw 2 cracked eggs in the sand and realized they were painted turtle eggs.
  • Wendy was in Hairspray. 100 people were there during all 3 performances, it was awesome.
  • We’re all going to Six Flags New England on Tuesday and the weather is supposed to be beautiful.
  • Nico has been hanging out with friend he hasn’t see in 2 years.
  • Morgan is going to a church retreat – for free! It should cost $300!
  • Grace got to stay at a hotel with a pool.
  • Julia went to the beach with her soon-to-be step sister and found cool red ruby stones.
  • Max has 2 pairs of shorts!
  • Leila talked to Jakers. We miss him.
  • Reed got a used phone, but it broke. So they sent him a refurbished one – that broke. So they sent him ANOTHER refurbished one – THAT broke. So they sent him a new one!
  • Aaron went to see How To Train Your Dragon 2.
  • Alyssa got a new phone too.
  • Alyssa also found a $5 on the ground.
  • Julia left her phone in the bathroom when she was camping. When she realized it she went back and someone moved to sink. They didn’t steal it!
  • Michael played airsoft with his friend and dominated.
  • Gabriel had a crazy week but found time to go fishing with his grandfather.
  • And I was hoping to go to my pool on Saturday with some friends but the stupid sun went away and it got cold. So Bethany and I spent the afternoon sitting on my bed, eating fruit and watching almost a full disc of FRIENDS. It was delightful.

2014: The Year of Jessica – Halfway…ish

When I started this year out, I decided that this was going to be MY year – The year of Jessica! –  and I said it with big arms! Like this! (…except without the field of flowers)

I wasn’t going to worry about what other people were doing, where I was in relation to that, or even what I was doing for that matter.

I wanted to try new things and travel and do something that scares the crap out of me (I still have time for that).

I wanted to focus on me and what makes me happy.

I wanted to start something with this blog that made a difference, and I think I have with Simple Little Sunday. It may still be a small platform, basically limited to my youth group, but I’ve learned to not despise the days of small beginnings.

I wanted to become a runner and guess what, I’ve successfully finished 2 5K’s with a smile on my face.

I wanted to enjoy being single and having the freedom to do whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted – after all, that’s the dream when you’re a kid, right?

I was doing all of these things! And loving every second of it!

…until one day, in the beginning of July, when this amazing, handsome, kind, smart, caring, funny, compassionate, God-fearing, hugable, wonderful man came and mucked everything up.

Did I see him coming? – Nope. I didn’t think it was an option so I pushed it out of my head.

Did other people see him coming? – Apparently (although we only believe some of them)

Am I ridiculously happy that he did? – You betcha!

It’s only been about two and a half weeks, but he’s already taught me so much. He makes me want to be a better person, just by being himself. He challenges me to communicate better, which is something so foreign to me when it comes to relationships with guys that it catches me off guard. He PRAYS for me (and I pray for him)! Guys. Do you pray for your “sig-oths” as Schmidt would put it? If you don’t, you should start – it’s pretty awesome, for all involved.

I could go on and on, but I won’t. Partly because I’m sure you guys don’t want to read it all, and partly because he’s a pretty private person and I don’t want to violate that.

But seriously, this year isn’t playing out the way I expected it to at all…it’s playing out better than I could have ever imagined! Cheers to more of 2014!

  • Julia only has 32 days til vacation
  • I went to happy hour with my work wife and a friend we haven’t seen in at least a year
  • Julia and Leila’s friend Emma came back (she was in Florida)
  • I went to a wine/chocolate tasting with Bethany today and thought I had to pay for the glass, but since they didn’t have change for a $20 they gave it to me for free

So that’s our list…what do you have to add to it?

I Lied – Great

Sunday I said I would write about my weekend yesterday…and I didn’t. I went home from work and watched the entire first disc of season 2 of Big Bang Theory and then went running instead. All this time I’ve been telling you all that I’m truthful and real and here I am lying to your face.

I also just realized I haven’t written any more about my time in Cyprus.

Man, I suck!

Without further ado, it’s time to make good on some promises. My 4th of July weekend was, pants down, the best 3-day weekend I’ve had in a LONG time. I don’t know what I did to deserve such amazing people in my life, but “blessed” seems to be an understatement.

FRIDAY it rained. 4th of July looked like it was going to be a washout. I planned on having people over for a cookout and swimming, but the weather decided to give me the proverbial finger. Joke’s on the weather though, because my friends are the best! They still came over, we ate, we drank, we watched a hot dog eating contest (barf) and the World Cup, Mia (my cat) got to cuddle with her BFF Sergio for a while, I got to cook some delicious food with my friend Julian; it was a nice little afternoon.

Earlier in the day I had received a text from a friend asking if I wanted to “come over tomorrow night for burgers and fireworks”. Well, 2-marg-Jess saw “burgers and fireworks” and ASSUMED it was for the 4th. That’s logic, right? Wrong. About 20 texts and 4 confused people later, I’m halfway to his house and realize the invite was for SATURDAY, not FRIDAY. Great. nice work 2MJ. Way to have a blonde moment. I went over anyway and just hung out, so the evening wasn’t a total loss. Plus we had something to laugh at – me.

Friday was a great day.

SATURDAY I had a delightfully lazy morning, followed by an equally lazy afternoon by the pool followed by an evening of so many wonderful things it’ll be hard to wipe from my memory. Not that I want to…but you know what I’m saying. Friends, drinks, food, fireworks, a sleigh, a flash bang, and so much more. I even “learned” that an exterminator costs $500 and a case of shotgun shells costs $50, so if you “got an ant problem” (…those “sombitches”), using the shotgun “just make good sense”.  I seriously laughed so hard and smiled so much that by the time I left, at around midnight, my face hurt.

Saturday was a great day.

SUNDAY after church Bethany and De (favorites from church) and I went to Christine’s (a favorite from high school) pool. The beauty of Christine is that she can mix with any group of friends I have – work, church, college, random – she integrates so easily. I don’t get it, but I do love it. I also got to see My Julie and her adorable family.

Sunday was a great day.

And this coming weekend only promises more great things! Sailfest and a wine/chocolate tasting are where it starts, but I doubt that’s where it’ll end.

This is a great summer.

Beauty, Travel, The 4th and The Mall #SimpleLittleSunday

We’re growing! We had 2 new faces in youth group today! Morgan isn’t entirely new, we see her when she’s visiting her grandparents; but Grace is a new addition, and we like her.

Before we get started on Simple Little Sunday, I need to tell you a story about the dress you see me wearing in the picture. Super cute, right?!

I took Leila and Julia to the mall with me on Wednesday because I needed to buy a little black dress for the Sara Bareilles tour. I must have tried on 15-20 dresses, most of which were never real contenders, but that’s half the fun of going to the mall – trying on ridiculous clothes. It’s like dress-up for people over 10.

Anyway, I spotted the black and white plaid dress and NEEDED to try it on. It was so comfortable, and so adorable, I fell in love and HAD to buy it. No, this is not a “wanted to” situation, it was a “needed to and had to” one. The dress was $30 but I didn’t care, because I needed the dress. When I went to buy the dress it was 40% off! Both girls looked at me and said “SIMPLE LITTLE SUNDAY! AUNTIE JESS!!!”

I love the fact that I found a way to teach them without really teaching them!

That said, here’s today’s list:

  • Max couldn’t find a video game after 2 hours of looking through all of them, rearranging them and organizing them. Once he decided he wasn’t going to play it – Womp! There it was! (OK, that’s my paraphrasing, not his.)
  • Nico said that yesterday and today have been beautiful – we all 100% agreed!
  • Julie went for a jog with her mom on the track at her school
  • Julia saw one of her friends from elementary school and got to rekindle the friendship
  • Morgan went to NYC with her Opa and had a great time
  • I went running one night and discovered how amazing jumping into a pool is in your running clothes (sans shoes)
  • 4th of July – thank you America (…that was Tim)
  • Max got birthday and report card money and then he could go do stuff – but he didn’t do anything…yet
  • Leila went to the mall with me and Julia
  • Leila also had a 5 year old fall in love with her (in the adorable way, not the creepy way)
  • One day I was driving home and really needed a good, solid hug. When I got home my friend’s dad (my second dad growing up) was there talking to my mom. I was JUST in time because he was leaving and I got the big ol’ dad hug I was craving all day.
  • Grace’s sister was being annoying so she hid in the bushes and saw a butterfly (Ha! That’s how you start SLS!)
  • Julia got to play hide and seek a lot on the 4th with a bunch of kids. This was especially great because Leila didn’t want to play with her all week.
  • Leila got to hang out with her friend Hannah’s super adorable baby

And that’s that!

I had probably the best 3-day weekend I’ve had in a LONG time but I’ll write about that tomorrow. Today isn’t about me, it’s about God’s love.
